This long-established Deddington charity runs the four almshouses in Church Street which provide accommodation for local people in need of a home. The charity also has a tradition of supporting education. Currently this takes the form of after-school art classes for children at Deddington’s primary school.
Deddington Charity Estates (DCE) owns and maintains the Town Hall, the Grade II listed building in the centre of the Market Place. Another asset is the Pest House Fields, lying to the west of the layby on the Banbury Road, alongside the gated Milton Road. |
The charity has been running for more than 400 years, formalised as the Deddington Charity Estates in the 19th century by a group of feoffees – men of substance in the community (always men back then) – who rebuilt the Town Hall in 1806 and commissioned the almshouses in 1818.
The charity is now run by an ten-strong board of trustees – or feoffees. When one of the almshouses becomes vacant, the board advertises locally for a new resident: under the Town Hall, in the Church Porch and on this website. Find out how to apply here. |
